March is author month for Waipā District Libraries and we have again partnered with the Cambridge Autumn Festival to bring a number of author and other events to you during this festival time.

There are writing events for budding poets and authors, plus storytimes and writing workshops for the children.

Get Active launches 3 October

Waipā District Libraries Get Active programme for 2023 launches next week with the Ride the Raceway event at Cambridge Raceway. Celebrating the International Day of Older Persons, this event is for push/pedal bikes (including eBikes), starting at 11.30am (Tuesday 3 October). Riders can ride around the Cambridge Raceway circuit for as many times as they feel comfortable up to a 30 minute timeframe.

Winter Reading Challenge 2023

Waipā District Libraries Get Lit! Winter Reading Challenge is set to return, starting Tuesday 6 June.

This year there will be bingo cards for adults, youth (7-17 years) and a comics edition.

The challenge lasts for 11 weeks, so there is plenty of time to join the programme and work on an entry or two.

Heritage Month 2023

February is Heritage Month for Waipā District Libraries.This year we are able to offer both in person events and outdoor activities for those keen to research their local history and heritage.

The scavenger hunt is available in both Cambridge and Te Awamutu, with questions unique to both locations. We are inviting entries from all ages, with one major prize of a KoboLibra2 eReader package valued at $350.

Libraries transform with SMART technology

People visiting Waipā libraries this week will notice big changes as members use new technology to self-issue books with digital kiosks.

The new state-of-the-art system, called RFID  (Radio-Frequency Identification), incorporates a wireless radio system and an electronic tag attached to library items.

Ride the Raceway - New Date

We were to be launching this year's Get Active campaign with a Ride the Raceway event on Friday 30 September, but due to weather conditions we have postponed to Friday 7 October.

The event is also to help celebrate the International Day of Older Persons (Saturday 1 October) and is kindly supported by Cambridge Raceway.

COVID-19 Protection Framework - Red setting

New Zealand is moving to the red traffic light setting of the COVID-19 Protection Framework from 11.59pm, Sunday 23 January. Our libraries will be open but with restrictions in place.

Numbers inside the libraries will be limited to 30 in both Cambridge and Te Awamutu. Time restrictions may apply to visits if maximum numbers are reached.

There are no changes to our opening hours, which are currently 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 9.30am to 1pm Saturdays.

Vaccine passes required

Following Central Government’s decision to implement vaccine passes and Waipā District Council’s internal risk assessment process, the Chief Executive has determined all Council-managed facilities will require a vaccine pass for entry into any Council building. This decision does not stop our services, but will change how we deliver some of those services for the community.

Waipā District Libraries have several options for patrons.

Traffic light system

Waipā District Council have made the decision that to ensure a safer environment for our patrons of all ages, including those vulnerable in our community, that vaccine passes will need to be sighted for entry to our Libraries.

From Monday 13 December, those aged 12 years three months and older will require a vaccine pass to enter the premises.

Christmas activities

Waipā District Libraries has a number of virtual activities and competitions that can be enjoyed in the lead up to Christmas.

Christmas specific competitions include the Christmas Stocking Competition for all ages and for the younger ones, the Kids Christmas Cookie Bake-Off Competition. Our card and craft activities will be online this year.

Libraries open

Cambridge and Te Awamutu Libraries are open.

Restrictions will continue to apply including limits on numbers inside the libraries. Mask wearing, hand sanitising, contact tracing and social distancing will also apply. Patrons are asked to continue to return their items through the after hours returns.

Virtual programming in Level 2

Programming continues in our libraries during Alert Level 2, but allbeit in the virtual space.

Term time children's programmes are available virtually on a Tuesday and Thursday as per original schedules and in addition thanks to LIANZA (Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa) and the Coalition for Books NZ, additional virtual stortyimes are also available on the weekends.

Community Competitions Family interest

Libraries reopen at Delta Level 2

The Waikato Region will be at Delta Level 2 at 11.59pm on Tuesday 7 September. Our libraries will reopen Wednesday 8 September but with restrictions in place, including capacity, sign in requirements and the requirement to wear a mask.

Our opening hours will change (9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and Saturday 9.30-1pm) and our programmes will also be affected.

Move to Alert Level 3

On Tuesday, 31 August at 11.59pm, New Zealand south of Auckland will have moved to Alert Level 3.

Our libraries will be working under the following conditions: Our libraries will be closed to customers even though staff may be on-site. After-hours returns/bookdrops will remain closed. Due dates for all items will continue to be extended. No items will be due back during the time of closure. There will no additional charges to borrowers.

Our libraries are currently operating at Alert Level 4 conditions.

This means our libraries are closed as are all other Council facilities.

Our bookdrops for after hours returns are now closed. Due dates for all items have been extended (currently to 10 September). No items will be due back during the time of closure. There are no additional charges to borrowers.

Alert Level 2 conditions

The Waikato Region is now at Alert Level 2. Our libraries are open but with restrictions in place.

This affects our opening hours (9am to 5pm Monday to Friday only) and our programmes will also be affected. There will be no Toddler Time, Wriggle n Rhyme or Makerspace until Alert Level 1.

No events will take place until further notice. This affects Film Nights currently scheduled and may affect other forthcoming events.

Libraries reopen

After being closed for nine weeks our Waipā District Council’s libraries are now open (from Monday 25 May).

It has been a busy time for staff during the closure. As well as cataloguing and processing numerous new books, staff have been able to stocktake each of our collections.

Libraries prepare for opening during Level 2

New Zealand is now at Alert Level 2 and our Waipā District Council’s libraries are preparing to reopen. Our libraries will reopen at Alert Level 2 in stages.

We’re excited to announce we will be opening our doors to patrons from Monday 25 May. Some services will be available from Monday 18 May.
