This is a Bosch and Ballard detective thriller.

Bosch is loosely holding on to his connection with the force with a reserve officer status. He has also recently had an operation on his knee and has been diagnosed with an on the job illness. Ballard is working the night shift and sleeping on the beach during the day in her tent when she does take the time to sleep.

There are several incidents to investigate which bring the two together either to help each other or because their cases become interrelated.

John Jack Thompson has passed away. He is a previous partner/mentor of Bosch. He has left Bosch a murder book from the unsolved death of a young man in an alley. There are no notations to be found. It questions why he has taken the book.

Ballard helps Bosch with the case but is then involved in the investigation of the burnt body of a wealthy man.

Plenty of twists which bring the two together and mysteries solved in the end. Mickey Haller also takes the spotlight on a couple of occasions.

Hard to put down.
