This school holiday, we are running a week-long beginner chess course and holding a bunch of casual games for you to brush up on your skills!
The first week we will hold chess at Te Awamutu Library; the second week will be held at Cambridge Library.
The course:
The course will run from 1.00 pm through to 3.00 pm Monday - Friday during the first week of the school holidays.
Course content by day:
| Monday | The pieces and the core rules of chess. Play your first game! |
| Tuesday | Special moves and foundational tactics to win. |
| Wednesday | Stages of the game, reasoning and chess notation. |
| Thursday | Pins, tempo, forcing moves and pawn structure. |
| Friday | A beginner's casual chess tourney - just a bit of fun! |
No registration required; all ages are welcome, though under 14s will need a parent onsite at all times. We are only limited by the number of chessboards we have on hand, so if you have a chess set at home, please feel free to bring it along! Otherwise it will be a case of first come, first served.
At the end of each session, the library chessboards will be left out until 4.30 for casual social play.
