Cambridge author and 2x Ngaio Marsh Awards finalist Nikki Crutchley chairs Hamilton thriller writer NF (Nikki) Webber, Te Aroha author Jenny Harrison, and 2x Acorn Prize winner Cath Chidgey in a fun and fascinating chat.

Heritage Month 2024

The popular heritage walks in Cambridge continue (hosted by Michael Jeans and Sue Milner), while in Te Awamutu the heritage walk makes a welcome return hosted by Alan Hall and Sandra Metcalfe.

Get Active launches 3 October

Waipā District Libraries Get Active programme for 2023 launches next week with the Ride the Raceway event at Cambridge Raceway. Celebrating the International Day of Older Persons, this event is for push/pedal bikes (including eBikes), starting at 11.30am (Tuesday 3 October). Riders can ride around the Cambridge Raceway circuit for as many times as they feel comfortable up to a 30 minute timeframe.

Are you interested in Family History? August is Ancestry Month and we are pleased to partner with the NZ Society of Genealogist groups in Te Awamutu and Cambridge.

A display in Te Awamutu is now on show until Saturday 5 August. Members from the group will also be available to provide assistance from 12noon to 2pm each weekday.

Waipā District Libraries Get Lit! Winter Reading Challenge is set to return, starting Tuesday 6 June.

This year there will be bingo cards for adults, youth (7-17 years) and a comics edition.

The challenge lasts for 11 weeks, so there is plenty of time to join the programme and work on an entry or two.

Get Active opportunities

Our annual Get Active Campaign launched last week with a Ride the Raceway event at Cambridge Raceway. To follow, there are numerous free or koha activities in both libraries including tai chi, find your fit, karate, Zumba, hip hop step, yoga and more (all suitable for most ages).

We have included a number of activities during the school holidays to allow parents to participate with their older children.

We were to be launching this year's Get Active campaign with a Ride the Raceway event on Friday 30 September, but due to weather conditions we have postponed to Friday 7 October.

Looking for children aged 8-15 years for PK Kids

Waipā District Libraries is hosting a speech night with a difference featuring children as the speakers.

We are bringing the 10x20 speech format to Cambridge for our tamariki to get involved. This means that speakers will talk to 10 slides for 20 seconds each slide. The images are of the tamariki's choosing and the topic can be anything!

NZ Music Month

Waipā District Libraries is pleased to support New Zealand Music Month. This year's theme is 'Level up your Local Talent'.

In the spirit of this year's theme we had sisters Ava (Clarinet) and Elise (Guitar) both from Cambridge High School playing Saturday 7 May, followed by Bluegrass Band, Bowstring (Steve, Colin and Anne), on Saturday 14 May.

Creativity rewarded

With the school holidays and ANZAC Day, April was a busy month for our libraries, not to mention the issuing of more than 38 000 items across the district.

It was lovely to see the care and passion that patrons put into their submissions to ANZAC Day displays in our libraries. Colonel Tony Hill (RSA Cambridge President) visited the Cambridge Library display to see the artwork produced to honour the men and women of the ANZACs. Donations to the RSA poppy appeal through pins and ANZAC biscuits were appreciated.

COVID-19 Protection Framework - Red setting

New Zealand is moving to the red traffic light setting of the COVID-19 Protection Framework from 11.59pm, Sunday 23 January. Our libraries will be open but with restrictions in place.

Numbers inside the libraries will be limited to 30 in both Cambridge and Te Awamutu. Time restrictions may apply to visits if maximum numbers are reached.

There are no changes to our opening hours, which are currently 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 9.30am to 1pm Saturdays.

Waipā District Libraries is hosting a PechaKucha event featuring children as the speakers.

A PechaKucha presentation is a format that uses slides or images that are displayed for 20 seconds each. The slides move automatically as the presenter is speaking. The topic can be anything of the speaker's choosing and they choose their images.

True Crime writer, Scott Bainbridge, grew up in Te Awamutu and will talk about his latest books and new projects following on from the interest generated last year in Cambridge, Graeme Woodfield has written a wide variety of books and visits Cambridge to talk about his journey as a writer, Sharon Holt brings her popular Te Reo Singalong Show to Te Awamutu and Julie Thomas and Trudi Caffell will run writing and self publishing workshops.

Library services return to normal

Library services have returned to normal following the move to Level 1.

Normal hours have resumed with the return of late nights on Wednesdays and Fridays. On Saturdays both libraries are open from 9.30am until 1pm.

Computers, printing services, magazines and newspapers are all available again. Books may also now be returned inside the libraries.

Regular children's programmes will return in Term 4.

Library events rescheduled

A number of library events have been currently rescheduled on the assumption that the Waikato will move to Alert Level 1 at 11.59pm on Sunday 6 September.

These include Film Club nights, Art Therapy Workshops for Children and the Kim King author talk on Invasive Predators in New Zealand. 

We are also pleased to announce new events including Make Give Live, a Beekeeper talk and details of our Get Active campaign for 2020.

School holiday activities and events

The theme for the School Holiday programme in July is Winter Warmers!

This is a virtual programme that families can do at home or away. Some inhouse events are also taking place.

Packs can be collected at either library while stocks last. A few basic supplies from home will be needed but the packs contain instructions (with daily videos on Facebook and YouTube available at 10.30am) and most of the materials needed to do the activities.

Author month opened with a bang with Get Published! by Ocean Reeve Publishing last week. The seminars on the book publishing industry were held in both Cambridge and Te Awamutu in front of highly appreciative audiences.

Next week younger audiences will be entertained by Sharon Holt and her Te Reo Singalong Show and in late March Trudi Caffell and Julie Thomas will be sharing their knowledge at events in Cambridge. There's also our 'Art with Books' competition.

Following a highly successful Heritage month, March focuses on authors and publishing.

Ocean Reeve Publishing is coming to Waipā prior to releasing Lisa Tamati's new book. Our libraries will be hosting the free 2 hour seminars in both locations.

Local authors will share their knowledge at two workshops and for younger audiences there will be a Te Reo Singalong Show!

Plough of the Pakeha presentation to close Heritage Month

A successful month of Heritage related events will come to a conclusion next week with a presentation on the story of the first ten years of Cambridge as a township by Roger Gordon (Waipa District Councillor and Cambridge Historical Society) and Greg Gascoigne (farmer and Rotarian).

The presentation references Plough of the Pakeha, A Cambridge Regional History by Eric Beer and Alwyn Gascoigne (Greg's father).
