If you liked Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' you will love this - it is a sequel of sorts.

Victor Frankenstein's great niece (significantly named Mary) needs a project to occupy her after a tragedy in her life. She decides to follow in her great-uncle's footsteps and crete a 'creature' - not human, but reptilian.

She succeeds, but this being 1850s Vicrorian England, her husband take the credit. (Look out for actual scientific names of the time).

The author doesn't mention this, but many animals return to their place of birth. This creature was brought to life in Inverness, which is not too far from Loch Ness ...

This novel was unsympathetic towards women, original and well-written. I enjoyed it immensely.
