The manuscript explores the French sailors and navigators who circumnavigated and explored the Pacific, ending with De Lesseps attempts to join the Atlantic and Pacific through the Panama Canal in chapter 14: Nightmare in the Pacific. (This chapter makes up the basis for Miss Gordon's address to the Cambridge Historical Society, see file CA.1972.8.3.)
